Mistakes Are Good

Well, I originally intended to make another Irish Chain using Kaffe Fassett fabrics and reversing the light dark values from the one I made a couple weeks ago.  It wasn’t until after I had sewn an entire foundation that I realized I hadn’t reversed the values.  Oops.  I wasn’t too worried though.  The blocks were very sweet and I knew I could come up with a good use for them.  I wound up using them like this:

It measures 10 1/2" by 12 1/2" finished.  The nine patch blocks finish at 1 1/2".  I do love it when mistakes turn out to be more fun than getting it right!

The dearly beloved likes this one.   “It shimmers,” he said.  (In person the colors are much more vibrant.)  Oh, she says, I’ll take that.  And it really does shimmer thanks to those gorgeous glowing Kaffe Fassett fabrics.  I’m calling this one “Stars in the Evening Sky” – for when the sky is still holding a bit of sunset glow but deepening, and the stars are just coming out.  Such a lovely time of day.

So this quilt and the Irish Chain are the projects for March 2010.  Click here to download a PDF file with directions.

Here’s just a little note on construction of the on-point version.  I really like to trim off the dog ears on triangles so that I get a clean line up when matching blocks.  I used the trim method I give in Miniatures in Minutes

I’m loving these little nine patch blocks and I have more little quilts in mind, but first I have a hankering to make some fabric hot pads to put under my new serving dishes.  With any luck, I’ll have gotten to those come Tuesday.
